The Cave

Mumford & Sons - The Cave

It’s empty in the valley of your heart
The sun, it rises slowly as you walk
Away from all the fears and all the faults you’ve left behind
The harvest left no food for you to eat
You cannibal, you meat-eater, you see
But I have seen the same, I know the shame in your defeat

But I will hold on hope
And I won’t let you choke on the noose around your neck
And I’ll find strength in pain, and I will change my ways
I’ll know my name as it’s called again

‘Cause I have other things to fill my time
You take what is yours and I’ll take mine
Now let me at the truth, which will refresh my broken mind
So tie me to a post and block my ears
I can see widows and orphans through my tears
I know my call despite my faults and despite my growing fears

But I will hold on hope
And I won’t let you choke on the noose around your neck
And I’ll find strength in pain, and I will change my ways
I’ll know my name as it’s called again

So come out of your cave walking on your hands
And see the world hanging upside down
You can understand dependence when you know the maker’s land

So make your siren’s call and sing all you want
I will not hear what you have to say
‘Cause I need freedom now
And I need to know how to live my life as it’s meant to be

And I will hold on hope
And I won’t let you choke on the noose around your neck
And I’ll find strength in pain, and I will change my ways
I’ll know my name as it’s called again

This is one of my favorite lyrics of all time, from Mumford & Sons’ song, Awake My Soul. I love the premise behind it and it has become something I will apply to my life forever. Why not have an everlasting reminder? It was done by Scott at Stiehl’s Body Modification in Ithaca, NY.

this is gorgeous

A line from Mumford & Sons, “After the Storm.” One of my favorite songs, from one of my favorite bands, and a quote that speaks to me a lot. So why not get it on my skin? I’ve been through heartbreak. This song is just a simple reminder that the rough times I’ve endured will not be for nothing, and I’ll soon find love again.

aslkdjsdf my tattoo!  well, not exactly, but i want these lyrics, too.  i kinda really like this font, in all honesty (mellow cursive would be nice, too), but i could never get it on my side; i just don’t think it’d look good.  i’m 99% sure that it’s going on my back, like my left shoulder area.  but yeah, this made me kind of excited.

tattoos!

1. hopefully this summer, my brother and i are getting semi-matching ones of “i love you” in sign language for our mom.  we might do different things for like, accessories (alzheimer’s ribbons, maybe something for our papa), but the “i love you” is going to be the centerpiece, if that makes sense.

2. i still want to get mumford and sons’ “love will not break your heart, but dismiss your fears” somewhere, but i can’t decide if i want it above my ankle or on my back, near my shoulder.  i’d have more room to make the font bigger on my back, but i’m not sure if i want to pay for something that i won’t be able to see.

3. i found a quote from one of dave eggers’ books, “be strong, be brave, be true, endure.”  i like that a lot, and i thought it would be cute to put one phrase on the side of each of my fingers, so it’d be like “be strong” on my pointer, “be brave” on my middle, “be true” on my ring, and “endure” on my pinkie.

so yeah.  we’ll see how that goes.

this is one of my top five favorite songs by m&s.  something about it, especially when it’s live, is just so gorgeous and perfect and passionate.  but i’ll stop raving now.

also, super jealous of my cousins, who got to see them/coachella in general.

Day 06: What band or musician is most important to you?

i’m lame, and am gonna do band and musician :P so here we go!

BAND: i’m probably gonna have to say mumford and sons.  their lyrics are absolutely gorgeous, and so is their music.  marcus’ voice is fantastic; it’s not perfect, but he’s so passionate, and i think that’s part of what i love so much.  and then ben, ted, and country just are the perfect compliment to his voice.  even though marcus has his name in the band, it’s not like he’s the main person, which i love.  they wouldn’t even be close to the same if any one of them was missing.  that makes me sound kind of cheesy, but it’s fine.  i can listen to them no matter what mood i’m in, and their songs just seem to mold themselves around whatever i’m feeling at the time.  even though they’ve only been around for a couple of years, my dad showed them to me before they started getting radio airplay and stuff, and i kind of feel like i’ve seen them grow, if that makes sense?  i also want some of their lyrics to be my first tattoo (“love will not break your heart, but dismiss your fears”), which i guess could be considered a big deal.  i don’t know, they just really mean a lot to me.

MUSICIAN: ben folds gets this one, hands down.  you know how so many people say that taylor swift describes their lives in her songs and all that stuff?  ben folds does that for me.  i have a playlist on my ipod to make me feel better when i’m feeling sad, and he’s got at least four or five songs on there (“learn to live with what you are,” “there’s always someone cooler than you,” “best imitation of myself,” “still fighting it,” etc.).  his lyrics are so smart and clever and at the same time, he does an amazing job of capturing emotions.  he’s ridiculously talented, both vocally and on the piano, and even though i’m being repetitive here, he’s a brilliant songwriter.  AND he just did an album collaboration with nick hornby, where nick wrote the lyrics and ben wrote the music.  this is just too much awesome to handle.  “the luckiest” is one of my favorite songs of his, one of my favorite songs in general, and i would really, really love it if it was my wedding song.  i hope my husband likes ben, or at least likes the song, because if we don’t use “the luckiest,” then…i don’t really know.  i’m sure we could work around it, but for now, it’s “the luckiest” or nothing.
